Why "Timbre of Grace"? What even is a Timbre?

The Oxford Reference Dictionary defines Timbre (pronounced "Tam-ber") as "The tone-colour or quality of a musical sound, the property that distinguishes the sound of a continuous tone played on two different musical instruments or sung by two different voices at the same pitch and intensity."

In normal words, it is what allows you to distinguish a trumpet from a violin, a piano from a flute. It is the tone-color that allows for the listener to identify an oboe by ear. It is the sound that gives the instruments their unique characteristics.

To me, therefore, the Timbre of Grace is the quality of a Christian that makes another walk up and say, "There's something different about you". It is the outwards manifestation of the inward abiding in Christ. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit, making the everyday and mundane into an extraordinary mission - to engage the lost for the purpose of furthering the Kingdom.

As a college student on leadership at the Baptist Student Ministry, my goal is to shine this Timbre of Grace in all things. Whether I'm engaging in conversations with my classmates, friends, or complete strangers, I desire to live a life that sounds and looks unique. I desire and strive to live in a way that I can be identified as a Christian by what I do and what I say.
